Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a holiday that marks the beginning of the year in the traditional Chinese calendar. What makes it especially fascinating is its difference from the Western calendar and its rich cultural tradition.
Last Saturday, February 10, 2024, marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year, beginning a celebration full of color, music and deep-rooted traditions. Although China follows the Gregorian calendar in daily life, for important holidays like this, the traditional Chinese calendar is followed, which is based on the lunar and solar cycle.
Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese horoscope, which are the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig. In 2024, we celebrate the year of the dragon, a symbol of power and good fortune.
According to popular belief, the animal that represents the year in which you are born influences your personality, destiny and fortune throughout your life, adding a mystical dimension to this holiday.
The beauty of Chinese New Year is that it is celebrated not only in China, but all over the world. From New York to Australia and Canada, Chinese communities and people of various cultures come together to celebrate with parades, fireworks displays, banquets and traditional rituals. It is an example of the cultural richness and diversity that enriches our lives.
Happy Year of the Dragon!
